The luminal A subtype had good prognoses while luminal B did not, suggesting that perhaps patients with luminal A tumors might do well with just hormonal therapy to block estrogen from spurring their cancers while luminal B patients might do better with chemotherapy in addition to hormonal therapy.

In some cases, genetic aberrations were so strongly associated with one or the other luminal subtype that they appeared to be the actual cause of the cancer, said Dr. Charles Perou of the University of North Carolina, who is the lead author of the study. And he called that ?a stunning finding.?

?We are really getting at the roots of these cancers,? he said.

It looks as though there are going to have to be clinical trials, but there are a number of breast cancer types with discouraging statistics, and now we can hope those can be much more effectively treated soon. As far as I can see, these include ones for which some women have prophylactic mastectomies, since if you carry the gene for them having your breasts removed may be the best option.

ScienceDaily (Sep. 19, 2012) ? Dyslexia may result from impairment of a different linguistic system than previously thought, according to research published Sep. 19 in the open access journal PLOS ONE.

Speech perception engages at least two linguistic systems: the phonetic system, which extracts discrete sound units from acoustic input, and the phonological system, which combines these units to form individual words. Previously, researchers generally believed that dyslexia was caused by phonological impairment, but results from the current study, led by Iris Berent of Northeastern University in Boston, suggest that the phonetic system may actually be the cause.

"Our findings confirm that dyslexia indeed compromises the language system, but the locus of the deficit is in the phonetic, not the phonological system, as had been previously assumed," says Berent.

In the study, Hebrew-speaking college students had difficulty discriminating between similar speech sounds, but had no problem tracking abstract phonological patterns, even for novel words, suggesting that the phonological system is intact but the phonetic system is compromised.

"Our research demonstrates that a closer analysis of the language system can radically alter our understanding of the disorder, and ultimately, its treatment," says Berent.

KABUL -- A suicide bomber blew up a mini-bus carrying foreign and local contract workers near Kabul airport in Afghanistan on Tuesday, with at least nine bodies lying near the wreckage, a Reuters witness at the scene said.

Afghan insurgent group Hizb-e-Islami claimed responsibility for the suicide attack. They said it was in retaliation for the film about Prophet Mohammad.

"A woman wearing a suicide vest blew herself up in response to the anti-Islam video," said Zubair Sediqqi, a spokesman for Hizb told Reuters.

A senior police source told Reuters that eight of those killed were foreigners working for an international courier company.

Sidiq Sidiqqi, the spokesperson for the Interior Ministry, told NBC News that there were foreigners in the van but we can not confirm any nationalities yet.

The attack underscored growing anger in Afghanistan over the film, which has enraged much of the Muslim world and led to the killing last week of the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans.

A pastor in Indiana has put up a sign that uses a historical image of the 1930 lynching of two black teenagers in an effort to recharge the black vote.

Rev. Joy Thornton, the senior pastor of Greater St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church in Indianapolis, said he?s concerned that African-Americans have grown complacent about voting, and he wants to urge people to exercise the right he says was hard won, the Associated Press reported.

The sign, which has stood for nearly a week along the street in front of the church, shows, on one side, a white mob gathered around the teens to watch the lynching in Marion, Ind. Atop the photo is the word ?VOTE!!!? Beneath it is the question: ?Is this a reason to vote?? The other side of the sign shows an image of slaves in chains, with wording beneath it that reads, ?Lest we forget.?

?It?s not a good example for him to have it like that,? Bishop told WISH TV. ?He meant well, but he went about it in the wrong way.?

Thornton said the sign isn?t meant to sway voters to vote for any particular party, but rather to urge participation in November's presidential election. He said he believes some black voters have grown complacent because of President Obama's stance on same-sex marriage.?

?Regardless of who you vote for, you need to exercise your privilege, which is voting,? Thornton said.

Joyce Hise, who also works across the street from the church, said she didn?t have a problem with the sign.

?It was just kind of a little shocker,? Hise told WISH TV. ?It made me stop to think. So many people don?t know, and they don?t realize this was part of our history, and it is a reason to vote.?

Joe Slash, president of the Indianapolis Urban League, told WISH TV that he agrees with the need to urge people to vote, but he doesn?t agree with the photos used for the sign.

Thornton, however, defended the shock value of the sign.

?I don?t think it is as harsh as the fact that when we talk about African-Americans being murdered and killed at an alarming rate,? Thornton said. ?It?s not as harsh as the fact we make up about 12 percent of the population and about 90 percent of the incarceration. It is not as harsh as the drugs that we are being exploited within our communities.?

Thornton, who said he?s received two complaints about the sign since it was put up, has no plans to take it down ?until the Lord says so.?

"With this approach, we can explain 25 per cent of variations in blood sugar levels. Previously, the best studies have explained less than three per cent," says Leif Groop from Lund University Diabetes Centre, the principal author of the study, which has been published in the journal Cell Metabolism.

The findings of the study provide greater insight into why, in cases of type 2 diabetes, the insulin-producing beta cells cease to be able to perform their function of producing sufficient insulin to keep blood sugar levels under control. "We have linked different gene variants to their effect on donated human beta cells and have compared cells from non-diabetics and diabetics," says Professor Groop. The research team had access to cells from 63 donors, nine of whom had had type 2 diabetes.

The starting point for the work was the 47 known gene variants that have a statistical link to diabetes. "We used them as 'bait' to find new signal paths and chains of events where the 47 variants work together with other genes. We have to map patterns because a single gene rarely acts on its own," explains Leif Groop. Various criteria were used to sift out the 20 strongest gene variants. The criteria included a difference between beta cells from healthy individuals and diabetics and a link to insulin secretion and blood sugar levels. The majority of the 20 variants identified were not among the 47 known risk genes.

The central aim of the study is to understand why certain gene variants raise the risk of diabetes. "By taking a new and more holistic approach, we have gone a step further than previous projects and succeeded in linking together gene variants and their signal paths in human beta cells that cause reduced insulin secretion. The next step is to look in more detail at the way in which the strongest genes affect insulin secretion," says Leif Groop.
