Computer Security

In Today?s Society, Protecting Your Computer Is A Requirement

Advances in computer technology is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it affords us quick and easy access to numerous conveniences such as bank statements, favorite shopping centers, school and health records, and more. On the other hand, it can also grant the same access to those who aren?t supposed to get it. Although it?s a rare occurrence, hacking has become the biggest criminal nuisance in computer history.

Make no bones about it. There?s nothing innocent or cute about the hacker. Today?s hackers aren?t the pimply-faced teen rebels that you might be thinking of. Instead, this generation of hackers are grown individuals who are more than likely earning a living by stealing the identities of innocent, law abiding individuals and then selling those identities to others who want to slip by the system. And the only protection against these seedy people is prevention.

Computer security couldn?t be more important than it is today and that?s why we?ve taken the time to introduce it to you. You can reduce the probability of experiencing identity theft by making your computer as hacker-proof as possible. All that?s needed is a little software and a lot of common sense.

1. Install an anti-virus/anti-spyware program. Anti-virus/anti-spyware software will stop malicious code from downloading and installing onto your computer while you peruse the Internet. Known as viruses, worms, or spyware, this malicious code can destroy important files and render your computer good for only one thing: sending sensitive data back to the server of an identity thief.

2. Don?t store sensitive data on your computer in the first place. Should your computer get infected with a virus, worm, or piece of spyware, you can thwart the individuals responsible by not storing your personal information on your PC so that when and if your computer does send back data ? it won?t be anything valuable. Hackers look for things like full names, social security numbers, phone numbers, home addresses, work-related information, and credit card numbers. If these things aren?t saved onto a computer, there?s nothing critical to worry about other than restoring your computer to a non-virus condition.

3. Don?t open files without scanning them with an anti-virus/anti-spyware program. In the past, the warning was to avoid opening files from people that you don?t know. Today it?s really not safe to open files from anyone (without scanning the files) because that?s how viruses get spread ? through files ? even by mistake. So even though your co-worker may have emailed a funny video, it?s no more safe to open than a video downloaded from a complete stranger. Be safe and scan each and every file you download from the Internet or receive through email regardless of where it came from.

4. Create a barrier between your computer and prying eyes. Anti-virus/anti-spyware programs are only effective after the effect. But you can prevent identity theft from occurring by installing a firewall. A firewall is software that checks all data entering and exiting a computer and it then blocks that which doesn?t meet specified security criteria (user-defined rules).1

5. Don?t click on website links in spam messages. In an effort to obtain personal information, some spammers will send email that asks you to click on a link. The email messages are often disguised as important messages from well-known online establishments, and they often try to scare their readers into clicking links with threats of closing an account of some sort. Sometimes the links are harmless and attempt to con the reader into volunteering personal information (credit card number), but other times the links attempt to download harmful software onto a computer.

Your best protection against computer crimes is your own knowledge. Hopefully the suggestions above will prompt you into taking appropriate action and into protecting your computer with the suggested tools. In doing so, you?ll not only protect yourself, you?ll prevent the spread of these malicious activities and protect others at the same time.

Graduation dissonance: Is college tuition worth it? No. And yes.

Graduation may give parents of college graduates buyer's remorse:? Pew studies shows 94 percent of parents expect their kids to go to college, but 57 percent question whether tuition was worth it.

It?s?graduation time. And with the caps and gowns and celebratory parties comes another, looming, reality for the high school set and their parents:? college tuition.

The Pew Research Center has conducted a number of studies over the past few years looking at college tuition and asking Americans whether they feel higher education is worth the cost, which is rising far faster than the rate of inflation.

There is some interesting feedback:

According to Pew, 94 percent of parents expect their child to go to college. But 57 percent of Americans say colleges fail to provide students with good value for the money spent.?

It seems contradictory, no?

But as Pew discovered, the complaints about value and cost are a bit like parents complaining about their teens' dirty rooms and poor driving. They might be distressed and disapproving, but they?re not kicking the kid out of the house.

The Pew surveys show that college is still ingrained in the American mentality as the universal post-high school goal; the path of opportunity and ?making it? in the US.

Even if it?s super expensive.

And even if, as some college presidents seem to suggest by their answers to a 2011 survey, not all American students are college material.

(Four in 10 college presidents said the higher education system in the US is headed in the wrong direction, and said that the caliber of students in college has decreased significantly.)

There are, clearly, some good reasons for college.

Beyond the personal and intellectual benefits, Americans make about an average of $20,000 more a year if they have a college degree ? that?s according to US Census data as well as estimates by college and high school graduates. (This, we should point out, masks a wide variation in returns-on-college-degrees. We hate to say mom and dad are right, but the engineering students do tend to make more than us history majors.)

Are you a Helicopter Parent? Take our quiz!

Meanwhile, 86 percent of college graduates say that higher education has been a good investment for them personally.

Even though 48 percent of students who take out college loans say that repaying the debt has made it harder to make ends meet.

This ultra-rare $3 gold coin could sell for $4 million at auction

Some $3 coins are worth a lot more than three bucks

Is this the most expensive $3 coin in the world? It very well may be if it sells for its estimated price of $4 million when it goes up for auction. It's not even the fact that it's?made of gold that makes this coin?extremely expensive ? it's the fact that it's one of two copies ever made, and that every "S" printed on the coin was hand-carved.

Officially called the?1870-S, the first copy of this coin was made by the San Francisco Mint to be placed in the cornerstone of a building in the city. When the coin was later unearthed and found damaged, the Mint created a second copy, which is currently in display at a museum in Colorado.

It's unclear whether the coin going up for auction is the original copy or if an unrecorded third copy was created. Either way, it was?found by a European tourist in 1997 while visiting San Francisco, glued inside a Victorian guide to the city that contains a history of the coin itself.

After 15 years of keeping the gold coin, the lucky tourist who found it decided to?auction it off at the?Four Seasons Auction Gallery in Georgia on June 2.?The starting bid for the coin is $1 million, but it's expected to sell for between $2 and $4 million.

Velti: In Mobile Ads, iOS Widens Its Lead Over Android

velti reportLast month, mobile marketing company Velti reported that iOS had pulled slightly ahead of Android in mobile ad impressions, after being tied at the end of last year. Now, apparently, iOS has taken widened that lead, if not by much ? it accounted for 55 percent of mobile ad impressions in April, compared to 45 percent for Android. The data is based on data from Velti's Mobclix Exchange, which serves ads to more than 33,500 apps, the company says.

    Groupon replaces 2 directors

(AP) ? Online deals company Groupon Inc. said Monday that it will replace two board members with executives from American Express Co. and accounting firm Deloitte LLP.

The company said Daniel Henry, chief financial officer of American Express and Robert Bass, a vice chairman at financial consulting firm Deloitte, will sit on Groupon's audit committee.

Henry was appointed to the board on April 26, and replaces Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz.

The move comes as Groupon faces growing scrutiny over its accounting practices. In March, the company restated its quarterly financial results, explaining that it lost more than it initially reported because it had to pay out more refunds than expected.

Its auditor, Ernst & Young, flagged a weakness in the company's internal controls. The company is working to hire more financial staff to help address its problems.

Bass will stand for election at the annual shareholders' meeting June 19 after he retires from Deloitte. He replaces entrepreneur and investor Kevin Efrusy.

"With their deep financial, accounting and operational experience, Dan and Bob will provide invaluable expertise to the Board going forward," said Eric Lefkofsky, Groupon's chairman.

Henry, 62, has been CFO of American Express since 2007. Bass, also 62, has been a vice chairman of Deloitte since 2006, and a partner there since 1982. He is retiring from Deloitte on June 2.

Groupon shares fell $1.27, or 10.6 percent, to close at $10.71. In aftermarket trading the stock rose 22 cents, or 2 percent, to $10.93.
