One man dead, one in hospital after shooting in downtown London, Ont.

The Canadian Press
Published Sunday, Sep. 30, 2012 10:40AM EDT

London police say one man is dead and one injured after an overnight shooting incident in the southwestern Ontario city.
Officers were called to the downtown area (around Richmond Street and King Street) just after 3 a.m. Sunday when gunshots were reported.
Police say officers arrived to find a disturbance involving several people and two men suffering from gunshot wounds.
Both were transported to London Health Sciences Centre where one of them died.
The other man was listed in stable condition Sunday with a gunshot wound that is considered non-life threatening. The men's names were not immediately released.
Police say seven people have been arrested for various offences but there were no immediate details on charges.

Libya attack: GOP goes after the White House, especially Susan Rice

Questions about how the Obama administration has handled the attack in Libya that killed the US ambassador on Sept. 11 have taken a harder political edge. Some Republicans say UN Ambassador Susan Rice should resign over faulty reporting of the attack.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee says it?s a scandal worse than Watergate ? that the American people ?have flat-out been lied too,? as he put it on Fox News Friday.

Eric Fehrenstrom, a senior adviser to Mitt Romney?s campaign (also speaking on Fox News), says, ?President Obama needs?to be held accountable for his?administration's attempts to?mislead the American people?about what happened in?Benghazi.?

Rep. Peter King, chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, has called for the resignation of United Nations Ambassador Susan Rice.

Blasphemy riots: 6 examples around the world

The broader theme here (and in many other partisan and conservative blog comments) is that President Obama wasn?t just unaware of the threat in Libya and its violent outcome, but that he and his administration were purposely untruthful about what happened.

The headline on Karl Rove?s column in the Wall Street Journal this week was ?Obama's Biggest Opponent Is the Truth.?

?Every day, it seems, he attempts to disqualify his opponent through deliberate and undeniable falsehoods,? Mr. Rove wrote. ?This is only one side of a two-sided coin. The president can't tell the truth about his own record either.?

In predicting what he?ll be dealing with in his upcoming debates with Obama, Mr. Romney himself told ?Good Morning America? earlier this month, "I think he's going to say a lot of things that aren't accurate."

The essence of the charge about Libya by Republicans is that the administration purposely tried to downplay the incident by asserting that the attack was spontaneous, prompted by riots tied to the anti-Islam YouTube video that set off protests in Egypt, Libya, and many other Muslim countries across North Africa and the Middle East.

In the days following the attack, Ambassador Rice (and others in the administration) left the impression that the attackers took advantage of the riot to quickly gather weapons and target the relatively defenseless consulate.

Only later did administration officials, including Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, acknowledge that ?terrorists? ? some with possible ties (or at least supported by) Al Qaeda ? likely were involved.

Is It The Right Time For Me To Buy Real Estate? | Eric Chua : Life ...

If you have never purchased a property before you may find that information regarding real estate may be very helpful. Start by reading this article to save you from losing money or making bad decisions.

If you are shopping for a home, it is important to bring your own professionals into the deal. It can be a lot easier to go with the appraiser and home inspector that has been chosen already by the seller. Of course, it will cost you money, but it could save you thousands in the end. Nevertheless, you are safer in the long run if you find people you know you can trust to protect your interests. If you are sure you get the truth from the beginning, you can save yourself a lot of money and stress later on.

When looking to buy an investment property, be willing to consider homes that need repair, rehab, or remodeling. You will have the benefit of having an immediate return on your investment as your property value will go up. In many cases, the value of a property increases by a higher amount than the actual improvement costs.

TIP! Prior to making the final decision to purchase a particular home, you should thoroughly research the neighborhood that it is located in. The property must be in an area in which you want to live in terms of surrounding stores, services and neighbors.

If you can?t make a traditional down payment yet, look into assistance programs. If you also get your seller to pay closing costs, then you can reduce by a lot what you have to save prior to purchasing.

Homeowner?s insurance should be purchased prior to moving into your new home. If you put this off, you may not be covered for any losses that may occur, and you never know what Mother Nature has in store.

You will know what the seller is asking for a home you are considering buying, but you still need to determine your own offer. With help from the seller, you should be able to settle on a final selling price you are both happy with.

TIP! If you plan on buying a foreclosed house, also plan on doing some repairs. Many of the foreclosed homes that are on the market have been vacant for quite some time.

Work to find out the housing market trends in your area. Give City-data.com a visit or any other sites like it so you can learn about the average housing prices, number of foreclosures and other relevant market conditions within a 15 mile radius. Investigate other aspects of a neighborhood, including household income, unemployment and local businesses. Very rarely can an extremely nice property outweigh an the impact of an area that has been hit hard by the economy, so be careful.

Make sure that you get a letter of approval first before you even make a bid on a house. Waiting for approval can cost more and will stretch out the process of buying the property.

Real Estate

TIP! Take the plunge and buy that home you are dreaming of. There is a controversy over whether this is the right time to buy and sell real estate; therefore, consider both sides before making a decision.

If you are looking to purchase real estate as an investment, you should seek the help of a real estate agent or broker. These people have a lot of resources that you might not be able to get. Most brokers have useful tools like specialized software that can search and sort through MLS listings. Although you can search MLS by yourself, using these tools makes the process work better. They will give you the ability to discover excellent deals you probably wouldn?t have seen otherwise.

Keep an account for extra costs that may be associated with purchasing real estate. Real estate buyers generally take into account only the amount of the down payment, relevant taxes that will be charged, and funds needed by the bank when determining closing costs. But there can be even more costs at closing. These may include property taxes and assessments.

Make sure you prepare a list of questions to ask real estate agents during the interview process before choosing one to represent you. Your questions should all be relevant. For example, ask the agents about the number of homes they sold over the past year, and find out how many of them were in the neighborhood where you?re planning to live. Regardless of the questions you ask, a good real estate agent will have ready answers to your questions. Make sure all questions are answered professionally.

TIP! You can get a precise price range for how much you should spend on your investment thanks to an online calculator. These tools allow you to input how much money you make, your daily expenses and any debt that you have.

If you?re aiming to purchase a home, you must ensure you don?t purchase one simply for the decor. You need to buy a home for its shape and how it is built. Buying a home based solely on decor or other aesthetic pleasures will most likely result in future problems.

Look at your credit report before you start looking for a house. Once you get your hands on copies of your credit reports, comb through them thoroughly and respond to any red flags there. As you start the process of buying a house, you have to ensure that your credit is good enough to get a mortgage loan.

Sex Offender

TIP! Some banks do not mandate an inspection, but you should get one done anyway. When purchasing a property, it is essential that you know what you are buying, so be sure to have a home inspection done by a professional.

Go online and search the sex offender registry in the area of any home you are thinking about buying. A real estate agent is not obligated to let you know if there is a sex offender living next door, or anywhere in the neighborhood. Do your own research!

Always establish what your main goals are. Put your expectations out there. The strength of feeling you have for each expectation determines its priority in your eyes. Throughout this process, you must never forget that it is unlikely that every goal of yours will be met. For this reason, it is important that you have some goals that maintain a certain level of flexibility.

You must be organized if you are looking into buying real estate. You should have a notebook full of the information you get from newspapers, friends, online, and also from your agent. With a handy reference notebook, it will be easy to find the information you seek.

TIP! Oftentimes, homes that need major improvements are offered at lower prices. It is a good way to save money if you can take your time, and improve your home one thing at a time.

If you are going to be starting a new business, before you purchase your building, make sure that the location is in a viable and relatively safe neighborhood. If you choose to open your business in a crime-ridden or downtrodden part of town, you are not likely to secure an affluent customer base. Ask Realtors where you should open up shop.

This information has outlined the challenges involved in buying properties. Still, if you research properties well and use good sense, you can be successful. Using these tips, you may purchase property

New fish species offers literal take on 'hooking up'

Friday, September 28, 2012

Fishing hooks aren't the only hooks found in east-central Mexican waters.

A new species of freshwater fish described by a North Carolina State University researcher has several interesting ? and perhaps cringe-inducing ? characteristics, including a series of four hooks on the male genitalia.

Females of the new species ? the llanos mosquitofish, or Gambusia quadruncus ? also have distinguishing characteristics, including a colorful anal spot.

A paper describing the new species, which lives in a diversity hotspot and seemingly branched off from its closest relative more than one million years ago, appears in the Journal of Fish Biology.

Dr. Brian Langerhans, assistant professor of biology at NC State and the lead author of the paper, says that these interesting characteristics may play important roles in mating control and success.

While more research is needed, Langerhans says that four-hooked genitalia on males can serve a purpose when females attempt to block or restrict mating attempts.

"Typically, reproduction is more costly in females, so females favor ways of reducing mating with 'lower quality' males," Langerhans says, "but reproduction is cheap in males and so selection favors ways of mating with as many females as possible. In Gambusia, some females, including G. quadruncus, have evolved modifications that appear to function as a blocking device ? essentially a big ball of tissue blocking most of the genital pore ? restricting entry of the male's gonopodial tip. Thus, the female would have to behaviorally allow the male to mate or the male would have to evolve a counter response to avoid this problem."

The four-hooked genitalia could be that counter-response, Langerhans says.

"Having four hooks on the gonopodium may provide a means of overcoming female resistance, latching on to the gonopore and transferring sperm in a manner that facilitates effective sperm transfer. Or it may serve to stimulate the female in a manner that causes responses in the female that facilitate effective sperm transfer," Langerhans says.

Somewhat similarly, the colorful anal spot on females appears to serve as a signal that only certain males are desired for mating.

"The differing, species-specific female anal spots appear to influence male mating behavior by signaling the location of the gonopore to the male, sometimes indicating the reproductive status of the female, and distinguishing fish of their own species from fish of other species to reduce costly cross-breeding, which can result in fish with reduced fitness," Langerhans says. "So it may be that G. quadruncus evolved different anal spots to help reduce interspecies matings and possible formation of hybrids."

Activists: Now, yes now, is the time for US to push for MidEast peace

Israeli-Palestinian group?OneVoice is bucking conventional wisdom and trying to drum up support in America for another presidential push toward a final agreement.

By Ariel Zirulnick,?Staff writer / September 28, 2012

A major Israeli-Palestinian activist group is bucking conventional wisdom by arguing that now is the right time to engage Americans in the moribund Middle East peace process.

The presidential campaign season is traditionally a terrible time to make any progress on foreign policy, especially during elections focused on pocketbook issues.

But when the presidential candidates and their parties brought Israeli and Palestinian issues into the spotlight this fall, the group OneVoice decided to seize the opportunity to insert itself into the debate.

Representatives of the group are touring the US this fall, urging American voters to sign a petition asking the presidential candidates to make rebooting the stalled peace process a top priority after Election Day. Their reasoning: The two-state solution cannot be achieved without US help ? a solution that they say is running out of time.

"Regional stability lies in resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Unfortunately, we are witnessing the rapidly growing distance between the present and peace," reads the petition.

The group's sense of urgency is shared by analysts and former architects of the peace process, even if they don't all share in the optimism that the US can be moved to act soon.?

"Everyone recognizes that you cannot assume the two-state solution will always be a viable option," says?David Makovsky, director of The Washington Institute for Near East Policy's Project on the Middle East Peace Process.?"If you ignore it, you ignore it at your own peril. If it festers, it will breed radicalization."

Ron Pundak, an Israeli architect of the Oslo accords and chairman of the Palestinian-Israeli Peace NGOs Forum, argues that current trends like settlement expansion are closing the door on the possibility of Israel and Palestine as two separate states.?

"What is happening now, as a result of the policies of the last 19 years, is this option of two states? is becoming a less and less realistic option because of realities on the ground, because of a change of the atmosphere," he says.

OneVoice's hope is that their petition will prove to whomever wins the Oval Office on Nov. 7 that tackling this political land mine will have payoff with voters, and that he will make it a top priority from the outset of his term.?No matter how many signatures they get on their petition ? it had 482 yesterday and they are aiming for thousands ? they will be presenting it to the winner that Wednesday.

But any such petition and publicity effort will be up against tremendous inertia in Washington, where past presidents have devoted much energy to the project only to see hopes dashed.

Presidential interest?

Mr. Pundak says that the perception in Israel is that Mr. Romney has already written off the peace process, seeing no chance of success, while President Barack Obama is likely to make another attempt if re-elected. He?believes that President Obama really wants to be one of the architects of a two-state solution.

"The question is whether his aides will tell him, 'Why bother? It's too difficult. Why should you enter into something where everyone has failed?'" he says.

But, he quips, "Maybe he should be the signateur for at least one peace agreement. After all, he is a Nobel peace laureate."

PORTLAND, Ore. Nearly 20 percent of people who underwent low back fusion surgery developed post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms associated with that surgery, according to a recent Oregon Health & Science University study published in the journal Spine.

Past studies have noted PTSD symptoms in some trauma, cancer and organ transplant patients. But this is the first study, its authors believe, to monitor for PTSD symptoms in patients undergoing an elective medical procedure.

"It is maybe not surprising that significant surgical interventions have psychological as well as physical impacts," said Robert Hart, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon, professor of orthopedics and rehabilitation at OHSU and senior author of the study. "I think it means that we in the medical community need to monitor for these effects in our patients and to manage them when they occur."

The study found that the strongest factor in determining whether a spine surgery patient suffered PTSD symptoms after the surgery was whether the patient had a psychiatric disturbance depression or anxiety disorders, for example before the surgery. But some patients who had no such pre-surgery diagnoses also suffered PTSD symptoms after the spine surgery, the study found.

The OHSU study involved 73 of Hart's surgical patients who underwent lumbar spinal fusion surgery, a procedure in which two or more lumbar vertebrae in the back are fused together, usually including implantation of metal screws and rods as part of the procedure.

Surgeons at the OHSU Spine Center always look for other ways to deal with back pain before surgery. But sometimes, surgery is the only option. And spinal fusion is often major surgery that may involve complications and often involves a long recuperation period. The majority of patients in the study reported a good experience and had substantial relief of their pre-operative pain.

Hart said the study results might offer guidance to doctors and surgeons in advising potential spine surgery patients about the surgery. For patients at higher risk, the results suggest doctors and surgeons might offer treatment for them prior to surgery, Hart said.

"At the end of the day, I hope this will make changes in the way we prepare people for surgery, to reduce these psychological impacts. This is analogous to how we currently optimize patients' physical condition before major surgery," Hart said.

Hart said he wants to study that issue next and measure which pre-surgery interventions might work best to reduce or eliminate any PTSD effects.

NJ woman accused of cancer scam for wedding, cash

MOUNT HOLLY, N.J. (AP) ? When Lori Stilley told her friends and family that she had bladder cancer, they delivered meals, held raffles and a T-shirt sale, hastily planned and paid for her wedding and raised more than $10,000 for her treatment.

But prosecutors say it was all a scam.

Stilley, a 40-year-old who lives in Delran, N.J., was charged Wednesday with theft by deception, charges her lawyer denies.

Authorities say she told family and friends in February 2011 that she had stage 3 bladder cancer and would need chemotherapy and radiation. Two months later, she told them ? and posted on her Facebook page and personal website ? that it was now stage 4, which means the cancer was spreading to other parts of her body.

Her friends and supporters pitched in the way people often do for sick loved ones: making a schedule of meal deliveries and ? when she said she didn't have medical insurance ? raising money.

The Burlington County Prosecutor's Office said family and friends also hastily planned and paid for her wedding to her boyfriend last year.

Stilley even wrote an e-book about her experience. They say "I'mpossible: How A Facebook Group Loved Me Through Bladder Cancer," selling for $14.99 a copy, raised more than $3,000.

An investigation found that Stilley had never been treated for nor diagnosed with cancer, prosecutors said.

Her sister says she was the one who turned in Stilley. "I just did it for her to get help and for my niece and nephew, too, to feel safe," Lori Digiovanni told WCAU-TV in Philadelphia.

DiGiovanni told the TV station that she became suspicious when Stilley's story changed quickly. Soon after telling friends and family that she was making hospice plans and was given a month to live, she posted on Facebook that she felt a miracle coming and was feeling better.

DiGiovanni said she believes her sister needs mental health counseling.

Stilley's lawyer, however, said she did not do anything wrong.

"The Prosecutor's Office has not presented me with any competent evidence that would lead me to believe they are able to prove my client did anything wrong," Adam Malamut told the Burlington County Times in a story published Thursday. "The only evidence I'm aware of are statements made that I believe to be slanderous in nature from a family member with whom she's had a fractured relationship."

Stilley was arrested Wednesday and released on bail of $25,000.

"For this defendant to represent that she was dying from this terrible disease for the sake of personal gain and sympathy goes way beyond simply being a criminal offense," Burlington County Prosecutor Robert Bernardi said in a statement, "it was extremely cruel to those who were concerned and worked hard to lend assistance."

DUI tragedy forces Russian road safety rethink

(AP) ? It took a weekend road tragedy to jolt Russia into action over one of its most deadly threats: a chronic culture of drunken driving.

Five orphaned teens were waiting for a bus with their guardians in Moscow on Saturday when a car careened into them, killing all seven. Grief turned to outrage when it emerged that the driver was heavily drunk and had a string of traffic violations on his record ? including a DUI arrest two years ago.

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and lawmakers have reacted with proposals to stiffen penalties on drunken drivers, and parliament debated the measures on Tuesday. But with bribery so commonplace and road laws rarely enforced, many wonder whether even the toughest response can change a deep-set culture of reckless driving.

After the crash, Alexander Maximov stumbled out of his Toyota sedan, which he had been driving at 200 kilometers (125 miles per hour), bloodied and barely able to stand. He appeared in court Monday with his head wounds dressed, but still wearing the blood-speckled sweatshirt from the day of the accident.

The punishment for killing while drunk driving in Russia is stiff: The 30-year-old Maximov faces up to nine years in prison. But lawmakers are currently debating whether to make jail sentences even harsher, matching laws in the West.

Even President Vladimir Putin weighed in Tuesday, demanding tougher punishments, condemning Maximov's apparent blithe indifference after the crash.

"This criminal, he's a killer in fact, when speaking to investigators just said: 'I always do what I want,'" Putin said. "There are some things for which people just must be punished."

Many Russians are furious that drivers like Maximov, who already had a DUI penalty on his license from 2010, was allowed back onto the roads in the first place. Drunken driving is punishable here by suspension of the driver's license for up to two years. In much of the West, by comparison, drunken driving is punished with jail time, heavy fines and re-education courses.

It isn't only irresponsible drinking that makes Russia's roads dangerous.

Russia's cities are struggling with fast-growing traffic density, which spurs drivers into pulling crazy stunts to get home as early as possible, such as jumping lights, squeezing through every gap in traffic and opportunistic trailing of racing ambulances. According to a 2007 survey, the number of cars on Moscow's roads had increased threefold since the early 1990s, while road capacity has increased by only 30 percent.

Each year, approximately 30,000 Russians die in road accidents ? about the same as in the European Union, which has three times as many people and about six times as many cars as Russia. According to official statistics, only about 1,000 of those deaths are attributable to death by drunken drivers, but given the laxity of police enforcement and investigation, many in Russia doubt those figures.

Medvedev, who championed a no-tolerance policy in 2010 against drivers with even the slightest amount of alcohol in their blood, spoke out in favor of tougher penalties.

"Most of (our accidents) are committed by drivers who are completely drunk, and in this regard our country is in a worse state than any other," Medvedev said Monday, adding that it was necessary to think about "toughening the legal responsibility for such a crime."

In the wake of Saturday's tragedy, Moscow police have scrambled to show they are doing their bit, announcing that they had arrested over 130 drunk drivers on Sunday alone, according to Interfax news agency.

Over the past few days, lawmakers from the pro-Kremlin United Russia party have come forward with various proposals to tackle drunken driving. One plan suggested a fine of up to 100,000 rubles ($3,200), while another more drastic bill calls for life imprisonment for anyone convicted of killing someone while under the influence.

Pervasive bribery, and its acceptance among much of the population, will make implementing any such measures an uphill struggle, however.

According to a Levada Center poll in 2010, only 10 percent of those questioned said they thought negatively of people who gave bribes, whereas the majority considered it "necessary" in dealing with public officials.

The same survey showed that Russians pay the greatest amount of bribes for medical treatment. Paying off traffic police came in at a close second.

"Of course it's important to propose new laws, they need to be stricter," said Natalya Agre, president of Road Safety Russia. "You can increase the fine to $2,000, but once again, who is going to keep track of whether that fine is given, and who is going to pay it?"

Agre's company has run a sleek social advertising campaign against drunken driving, and has begun attracting attention from big talent. A feature-length film by the company titled "There's No Hurry" was made with the help of some of the country's best directors and actors.

More important than police enforcement may be fundamental change to the car culture in Russia, where drivers are notoriously aggressive and fast.

"The driving culture in our country plays a key role," said Agre.

Ezy Buy Car Auctions | Payout Over 'Sham' Sale | Stuff.co.nz

A couple with limited English who bought a faulty vehicle under a ''sham'' agreement have been refunded by the car yard involved after a tribunal complaint. ?

In February Tere and Ina Isaaka agreed to purchase a 2001 Honda Odyssey for $6900 from Ezy Buy Car Auctions Limited which they later rejected because it was faulty and the trader refused to repair it.

The Cook Islands' couple visited the car yard on February 25, but despite paying a $700 deposit were refused a test drive.

The couple claim the salesman told them if there were any problems with the vehicle the car yard would repair it.

The Isaakas then signed various documents which detailed the vehicle was sold under competitive tender and that they accepted it was ''in an as is where is condition'' and carried no warrant or right of return.

The couple, who traded in their 1994 Mitsubishi Delica for $2500, also purchased a two year mechanical breakdown warranty.

On February 26 the Isaakas returned to the car yard and again asked to test drive the Honda, but were told they couldn't because it was being serviced. However, once various finance agreements were signed, Tere Isaaka was handed the keys.

He told the Motor Vehicle Disputes Tribunal of New Zealand the first time he drove the vehicle it did not idle properly and the engine shook. The next day while his wife was driving the engine cut out and a management light came on.

Ina Isaaka took the vehicle back to the car yard on February 28 and asked for a refund believing she had returned it within an appropriate time period.

According to the tribunal decision a sales manager at the car yard told her she couldn't return the vehicle and that her Mitsubishi trade-in had been sold. Ina Isaaka was then referred to Protecta who her and her husband had bought mechanical cover from.

The Isaaka's say they returned the Honda to the car yard on March 1 and again the following day and were told ''there was no such thing as a refund''.

The couple supplied the tribunal notes from assessors detailing the Honda's mechanical faults which included problems with the engine stalling and the vehicle surging.

On March 3 they had the vehicle scanned which highlighted other electrical problems.

On May 5 Tere Isaaka sent a letter to the car yard claiming the Honda had serious faults, was not of ''merchantable quality nor reasonably fit for purpose'' and that he'd been misled by the trader's conduct.

He rejected the vehicle and sought a refund. The car yard presented the tribunal with 20 documents relating to the sale, including information that stated sales by auction or competitive tender were exempt from the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993.

The tribunal rejected that the vehicle had been sold by competitive tender as that required ''evidence of rivalrous behaviour by tendering parties'', for which there was none.

''The tribunal, on the fact of this application, is satisfied that the trader has simply attempted by sham documentation and dressing up its sales premises with exclusionary signs to create the illusion that sale of the vehicle to the purchasers took place by competitive tender to attempt to avoid its statutory responsibilities under the Consumer Guarantees Act,'' the tribunal found.

The tribunal said the Isaakas rejected the vehicle within a reasonable time period and found the Honda was faulty at the time of sale.

Ezy Buy Car Auctions Limited was ordered to refund the couple's deposit of $3200, refund them any payments they had made, take over their finance agreement and pay $120 damages.

Vitamin D deficiency increases risk of heart disease, Danish study finds

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? New research from the University of Copenhagen and Copenhagen University Hospital shows that low levels of vitamin D are associated with a markedly higher risk of heart attack and early death. The study involved more than 10,000 Danes and has been published in the journal Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology.

Vitamin D deficiency has traditionally been linked with poor bone health. However, the results from several population studies indicate that a low level of this important vitamin may also be linked to a higher risk of ischemic heart disease, a designation that covers heart attack, coronary arteriosclerosis and angina. Other studies show that vitamin D deficiency may increase blood pressure, and it is well known that high blood pressure increases the risk of heart attack.

"We have now examined the association between a low level of vitamin D and ischemic heart disease and death in the largest study to date. We observed that low levels of vitamin D compared to optimal levels are linked to 40% higher risk of ischemic heart disease, 64% higher risk of heart attack, 57% higher risk of early death, and to no less than 81% higher risk of death from heart disease," says Dr. Peter Br?ndum-Jacobsen, Clinical Biochemical Department, Copenhagen University Hospital.

The scientists have compared the 5% lowest levels of vitamin D (less than 15 nanomol vitamin per litre serum) with the 50% highest levels (more than 50 nanomol vitamin per litre serum). In Denmark, it is currently recommended to have a vitamin D status of at least 50 nanomol vitamin per litre serum.

The higher risks are visible, even after adjustment for several factors that can influence the level of vitamin D and the risk of disease and death. This is one of the methods scientists use to avoid bias.

Blood samples from more than 10,000 Danes

The population study that forms the basis for this scientific investigation is the Copenhagen City Heart Study, where levels of vitamin D were measured in blood samples from 1981-1983. Participants were then followed in the nationwide Danish registries up to the present.

"With this type of population study, we are unable to say anything definitive about a possible causal relationship. But we can ascertain that there is a strong statistical correlation between a low level of vitamin D and high risk of heart disease and early death. The explanation may be that a low level of vitamin D directly leads to heart disease and death. However, it is also possible that vitamin deficiency is a marker for poor health generally," says B?rge Nordestgaard, clinical professor at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen and senior physician at Copenhagen University Hospital.

Long-term goal is prevention

The scientists are now working to determine whether the connection between a low level of vitamin D and the risk of heart disease is a genuine causal relationship.

If this is the case, it will potentially have a massive influence on the health of the world population. Heart disease is the most common cause of adult death in the world according to the World Health Organization (WHO), which estimates that at least 17 million people die every year from heart disease.

"The cheapest and easiest way to get enough vitamin D is to let the sun shine on your skin at regular intervals. There is plenty of evidence that sunshine is good, but it is also important to avoid getting sunburned, which increases the risk of skin cancer. Diet with a good supply of vitamin D is also good, but it has not been proven that vitamin D as a dietary supplement prevents heart disease and death," says B?rge Nordestgaard.

Cell Therapeutics' Highly Selective Oral JAK 2 Inhibitor, Pacritinib ...

Results Reported in the Journal of Clinical Oncology

SEATTLE, Sept. 24, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Cell Therapeutics, Inc. ("CTI") (Nasdaq and MTA: CTIC) announced today that the phase 1 study data of its highly selective oral JAK2 inhibitor pacritinib, or SB1518, showed encouraging anti-tumor activity and good tolerability in 34 patients with relapsed/refractory lymphoma.? The results were published online in the Journal of Clinical Oncology in September, 2012.

Thirty-four patients received daily oral doses of pacritinib ranging from 100mg to 600mg. The maximal tolerated dose was not reached. Median time on study was 88 days (range of one to 574 days) with six patients on pacritinib for longer than six months. Seventeen of the 34 patients (50%) had measurable decreases in target tumor measurements ranging from 4% to 70% shrinkage. Partial remissions were noted in three patients (mantle cell (2), indolent lymphoma (1)) while 15 patients had stable disease. Median progression free and overall survival was 120 and 130 days, respectively.? Gastrointestinal (GI) side effects were most frequent and mild to moderate (grade 1-2) with no patient reporting severe (grade 3-4) GI side effects even at the 600mg dose level. Cytopenias were infrequent and modest (less than 15% all grades).

"While it is becoming increasingly accepted that activating mutations in JAK2 and FLT3 play an important role in a majority of patients with acute myeloid leukemia, this phase 1 study suggests the potential therapeutic value of targeting the JAK2 pathway in lymphomas with encouraging single agent activity demonstrated despite the extensive degree of prior therapy and refractory nature of the disease among the patients who were enrolled in this trial," noted Steven E. Benner, M.D., M.H.S., Chief Medical Officer of CTI.

About the Phase 1 Study

The primary objective was a dose finding, pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamics study of oral pacritinib in patients with relapsed lymphoma.?

The study enrolled 35 patients with relapsed or refractory Hodgkin's or non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of any type except Burkitt's or CNS lymphoma. Patients had relapsed following a median of five prior therapies (range 2-15); 44% had failed prior stem cell transplant and 52% were rituximab refractory.

Thirty-four patients received daily doses of pacritinib for a 28-day each cycle of doses ranging from 100 to 600 mg/day. The maximum tolerated dose was not reached. Pacritinib inhibited JAK2 signaling at all dosing levels and FLT-3 inhibition were seen in most patients. The median time on study drug was 88 days (range of one to574) with six patients on pacritinib for longer than six months and 17 patients for longer than three months. There were three partial responses (greater than or equal to 300 mg/d) (2 mantle cell; 1 indolent NHL); 15 patients achieved stable disease. Seven of 13 patients with stable disease had tumor reductions ranging from 4% to 46% of baseline target lesions. Treatment was well tolerated, with mostly grade 1-2 toxicities. Gastrointestinal toxicities were the most frequent (32%) with no grade 3-4 side effects reported even among the 12 patients treated at the highest dose (600mg/d). Cytopenias were infrequent and modest supporting the lack of myelosupression with pacritinib therapy even among a patient population with poor baseline marrow reserve. The authors concluded, "collectively our data demonstrate that SB1518 is well tolerated in patients with relapsed lymphoma and has promising activity. The data warrant further efficacy studies of JAK/STAT pathway inhibitors either alone or in combination regimens."

The publication by Younes, et al. titled "Phase I Study of a Novel Oral Janus Kinase 2 Inhibitor, SB1518, in Patients with Relapsed Lymphoma: Evidence of Clinical and Biologic Activity in Multiple Lymphoma Subtypes," is available at http://jco.ascopubs.org/content/early/recent.

About Janus Associated Kinase (JAK)

The JAK family of enzymes are a central component in signal transduction pathways, which are critical to normal blood cell growth and development as well as inflammatory cytokine expression and immune responses. When dysregulated by activating mutations, uncontrolled blood cell growth can occur accompanied by inflammation and immune system activation contributing to disease manifestations in MPN.? Autoimmune diseases such as psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis also have activation of this pathway and JAK inhibitors are in development for these disorders.

About FMS- Like Tyrosine Kinase (FLT-3)

Normal expression of FLT3 is restricted to haemopoietic progenitor cells in the bone marrow, thymus and lymph nodes, but is also found on other tissues such as placenta, brain, cerebellum and gonads. Aberrantly expressed FLT3 is observed at high levels in a spectrum of hematologic malignancies including 70% to 100% of AML (Acute Myelogenous Leukemia), B-precursor cell ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia), a fraction of T-Cell ALL, and CML (Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia).

About Pacritinib

Pacritinib is an oral, once a day, tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) with dual activity against JAK2 and FLT3. Mutations in these kinases have been shown to be directly related to the development of a variety of blood related cancers including Myeloproliferative disorders ("MPD"), leukemia and lymphoma. Pacritinib has demonstrated encouraging results in phase 1 and 2 studies for patients with myelofibrosis and a phase 3 study is planned in this disease.?

FLT3 is a commonly mutated gene found in acute myeloid leukemia ("AML") patients and its activating mutations have been proven to be a negative prognostic marker for clinical outcome suggesting a possible future role for treatment of AML.

About Lymphoma

Lymphoma is a cancer of the white blood cells, namely lymphocytes, which constitute the lymphatic system. Lymphoma occurs when lymphocytes grow abnormally. The two main types of lymphoma are Hodgkin lymphoma and non- Hodgkin lymphoma. Lymphoma is the most common blood cancer.

A mouse in the house? Tips for finding a qualified pest professional ...

Saving a few bucks on do-it-yourself pest control isn?t worth the risks to your health and property, so call an expert.

(NewsUSA) ? Have you grown accustomed to the sight of gnawed-on package corners, bread crumb trails or mouse droppings? Are your Frosted Flakes littered with meal moth wings and larvae? Have you noticed several connect-the-dot piles of sawdust from hungry termites or beetles?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, you have a pest problem, and not the kind to be solved by a trip to the hardware store. Pest problems are best left to licensed and qualified pest professionals.

?Pests, such as mice and insects, can transmit diseases and cause severe allergic reactions.

Inhaling fumes from dead mice or their droppings can cause headaches, fever, nausea and diarrhea. That?s why we strongly encourage people to call an expert at the first sign of a pest infestation,? says Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for the National Pest Management Association.

However, weeding through the list of pest-control professionals can be a challenge. Some door-to-door pest experts will offer a free home inspection that leads to all sorts of costly treatments and lengthy procedures.

Henriksen offers the following tips on finding a trustworthy professional control agent:

Always deal with a qualified and licensed pest management company. Consider asking to see the license or other credentials of the pest control professional who comes to solve your pest problem.

Ask friends and neighbors to recommend pest control companies, and find out how satisfied they were with the service.

If large sums of money are required, get bids from several pest control companies to get the best deal.

Look into professionals that are members of national, state or local pest management associations like the NPMA.

Ask plenty of questions about the extent of your pest problem, how it?s to be treated and the work needed so there aren?t any unwelcome surprises on your bill.

Find out if the pest management company has liability insurance to cover any damages to your house or furnishings during the extermination process.

If your purchase comes with a guarantee, know explicitly what it covers, how long it lasts and whether any action is required to keep it in effect.
