Avicii, Tiesto And More Light Up London For EDC

17:15, Monday, 22 July 2013

As Lovebox celebrated its 11th birthday just a few miles away, Electric Daisy Carnival was popping its international cherry on UK soil on Saturday July 20 at London?s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.??

After phenomenal success over in the States, EDC has become synonymous with neon hedonism and a stunning setting for electronic dance music so expectations were high as a line up including Tiesto, Avicii, Steve Angello, Madeon, Chuckie, Sub Focus, Nero, Fake Blood, Jack Beats, Mistajam and more descended onto Stratford.

?

Feeling: As soon as the gates were open, revelers flocked to the main stage itching for a prime spot for all the main stage action. Smiles were abundant and appreciative ?bass-gurns? were plentiful as the acts dropped the harder basslines.?

?

?

The Look: A week since Jay Z and Justin Timberlake rocked the site with their epic Legends Of The Summer show at Yahoo! Wireless Festival the d?cor of the park couldn?t have been more different?

?

From the giant Triffid-like daisy arching and swaying over the main stage to the carnival performers on the ground entertaining (and bemusing) the dancing masses, Electric Daisy Carnival is all about the feel-good factor.

?

As for the people, the EDC-goers were a brightly coloured clad army of girls adorning daisy chains and guys rocking everything from singlets to tutus. We even spotted one guy stripped down to a pair of speedos!?

?

As for the production, the standard flames jets, smoke plumes, confetti canons and streamers were in effect for each act on the main stage ready to showered the masses with their choice at the push of a button on all the big drops. It may be clich?d these days, but it sure gets a reaction.

?

As darkness fell, the fireworks were launched, flares in the crowd were lit and patterns were projected onto the nearby velodrome and former Olympic Village turning the park into a huge outdoor nightclub.

?

?

Tunes: People come to EDC for the music, and it did not disappoint. Venturing away from the main stage madness, we found Goldie giving Mistajam?s bassPOD tent a DnB schooling and Crookers? in the neonGARDEN blasting out Love To Edit and their ACDC bootleg which still sound great after all these years.?

?

Even though the tents suffered from being slightly too close together ? good as it is, we heard the sounds of Breach?s Jack echoing out of more than one tent at the same time ? we only wish we could have split ourselves in two and gone everywhere!?

?

Back to main stage, the mighty Steve Angello, Avicii and Ti?sto kept the tens of thousands hyped to the very end.

?

Avicii peppered bootlegs of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and The Clash?s London Calling alongside his huge hits like Seek Bromance, Levels and of course ending on his UK No.1 Wake Me Up.

?

Ti?sto drove home the electro house of Maximal Crazy and his Icona Pop remix?but it was the classics the crowd were waiting for and they received.

?

Dimming all but the safety lights on stage for the ethereal vocals of Delerium?s Silence before lighting up the stage with shower of golden sparks as the beat kicked in catapulted the love for Ti?sto sky high. Ramping his anthem Adagio For Strings up to 140bpm before entering into Suburban Train saw everyone?s Ti?sto fix well and truly satisfied.

?

Sweat Factor: Judging by the topless lads, the bikini-clad girls and the odd man in speedos, EDC delivered the goods in terms of sweat and enjoyment.

?

Summary: Whilst the hype of the North American festival probably gave everyone high expectations, for a first-time festival outside its native country, EDC looks set to rival the London dance festival scene. The sound quality for an inner-city festival was great and the capital saw a glimpse of what we?ve been missing over the Atlantic.

With such a draw throughout the day on the main stage however, the smaller tents were often left half full yet the energy levels remained high. The daisy has bloomed and the only way is up ? bring on next year where we're sure things are going to a lot noisier, a lot brighter and a lot weirder.
